Work once again brought me to the Qax region, near the border with Georgia under the backdrop of the Greater Caucasus Mountains.
Felt like being home. Fresh clean air, stunning mountain views, cows everywhere. What more could I ask for…
Maybe a cup of tea?
In this knockout gorgeous, desolate place, border guards who first questioned our activities, then warmed to our presence, surprised us with tea. I have no idea how far one of the officers drove to get it, but I think they must be missing the company of other humans. Nothing really tastes better than an unexpected cup of tea in the middle of nowhere.
I had a similar awesome tea experience in the North Yorkshire Dales during the FMD outbreak in 2001. After driving for an hour in the dark to show up at a farm at 4am where I was not welcome, yelled at with raised arms for who knows what besides the anger and frustration that churned in most of the farmers during that time, listening, listening…and then being offered a cup of tea…and a shot of whiskey. I passed on the whiskey, but the tea was like no other, solid as the earth, warm like an arm around the shoulders, simple and sustaining. I understood at that moment how (because they drank that tea) and why (to get more tea) the British conquered the world back in the day.

How lovely. Knowing now what a difference sn unexpected spot of tea can express, I will be offering it. You know I love cows as well, but Kates, I will not be able to offer them as readily. At least not at this time in my life. Here's to the next cup of tea we share. I miss you, but heartfeltly glad for your employment, as well as its worthiness and adventure. Cheers girl friend.
